Civil CitationsDecember 15, 2009, at the recommendation of Police Chief Stephan Schwein, Oxford City Council adopted a new codified ordinance titled “Police and Fire Civil Citations”. The passage of the ordinance allows Police Officers to take enforcement action in safety issues without issuing citations which could result in either court appearance and/or court cost. The Oxford Police Department will begin using civil offense citations on March 15, 2010.
Presently, for example, a simple "no front license plate" citation for a motorist operating a vehicle registered in Ohio will cost the driver $165.00 ($60 fine + $105 court cost). The new ordinance will require the same basic costs ($60) of the violation in terms of a fine without the additional court costs. As in all civil violations, the violator has the option of a hearing before an independent hearing officer to insure due process. As of March 15th, OPD will be vigorously enforcing violations of the attached sections of civil offenses. To view a copy of the new ordinance, click on the below PDF.
